What is the difference between PNG, JPEG and WebP?

PNG is lossless and supports transparency — the pixels are preserved exactly, which makes it ideal for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges. JPEG uses lossy compression and has no transparency, but produces small files for photographs with lots of color detail. WebP is a modern format with excellent compression that usually beats both PNG and JPEG at a similar quality, and it supports transparency too — though a few older apps can't open it.

When should I use each format?

Use PNG when you need transparency or crisp graphics and don't mind a larger file. Use JPEG for photographs you want to keep small and share widely. Use WebP when you want the smallest file at good quality for the web — for example shrinking a large photo before uploading it to a website. For lossy formats, the quality setting trades file size against visual detail.
